GERMAN WINES

Of all the world’s fine wines those of Germany are currently the most underrated (and therefore often the best value for the money).

White

Mosel • Saar • Ruwer
Mosels (including Saar and Ruwer wines) are so attractive young that their keeping qualities are not often explored, and wines older than seven years or so are unusual. But well made wines of Kabinett class gain from three or more years in the bottle, Spätlese by longer, and Ausleses and Beerenausleses by anything from 10 to 20 years.

Rheinhessen, Nahe, Rheinpfalz, Rheingau, Franconian
Even the best wines can be drunk with pleasure after two or three years, but these Kabinett, Spätlese and Ausleses wines gain enormously in character by keeping for longer. Rheingau wines tend to be longest-lived, improving for 10 years or more, but wines from the Nahe can last as nearly as long. Rhinehessen wines usually mature sooner, and as with the dry Franconian wines.

Red
Spätburgunder, or the pinot noir grape, is the best red wine grape in all of Germany. And like its white grape counterpart, it is not widely appreciated outside of Germany.

Dessert Wine
Wine connoisseurs all over the world, recognize Germany’s sweetest wines as among the greatest wines on the face of the earth. The sweetness of Germany’s dessert wines-- both the honey flavored botryised wines (trockenbeerenauslese and beerenauslese) and the lush, sweet eisweins-- comes from allowing the grapes to hang on the vines longer, thus intensifying their sugar content and flavors.
